SHOP /ˈʃɒp/ n (abbrev. of Self-Help on Presentations) Sessions during which doctoral students meet, make short presentations in English and give each other some serious constructive criticism.
Why? A group of doctoral students in Irish Studies from Paris 3, Paris 4 and Lille 3 have come together to work on their presentation skills. Realising that our presentation skills are not always as good as they could be (and often not as good as visiting speakers from the UK and Ireland), we created SHOP.
Where? We meet at Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle at the Centre Censier, 13 rue Santeuil, 75005 Paris, M° Censier-Daubenton (map). Room 318.
What about the presentations? There will be a maximum of five 10-minute presentations per session with 10 minutes of questions and 10 minutes of feedback per paper. Presentations should be in English and relevant to your own research. It could be on any topic - we have chosen general topics for each session, but they are only an indication.
Those presentations aim at practicing any type of skill we might need: using handouts, using powerpoint slideshows with an overhead projector, etc..
When? Every second Saturday of the month, at 10 am and through lunch time. (We usually go for lunch together) The next session will be:
14 June: Rhythm
:: Last minute notice : The 14 june session is cancelled (sorry about that) ::
:: Check this page in the coming days for the next sessions ::
Simon Hierle: The Nun, the Feminist and the Researcher: A Viable Combination?
Cécile Chartier: 'Have You Ever Pawned a Woman?' Women, Morals and Money in O'Brien's short fiction
Sébastien Mort: Laura Ingraham and the media strategy of the New Right
Who can join? SHOP is open to any doctoral student interested in participating constructively to a doctoral project, wishing to improve their oral skills and willing to help others.
